Secrets of Power Speculation

Legends of the Force has been released, so of course that means it’s time to start wildly speculating on what the next set, Secrets of Power, might bring to the game.

** Small disclaimer up front. This is all entirely speculation and at this time Porg Depot has no advance knowledge of anything coming in the next set at the time we wrote or posted this.

Actual Electricity

Set five, Legends of the Force, focused on the Force which makes a ton of sense based on just the name.  All the leaders from that set had some interaction with the Force token.

What could Power be?  Maybe there is a power token that does something related to things that would need to be powered up thematically.  Ships maybe, except we just had Jump to Lightspeed so that seems unlikely.  Could be droids.  There may not be quite enough variety to build a full eighteen leader set around them, but come on, R2-D2 as a leader? That would be either glorious or unplayable. Possibly both.

Power Creep

“Power” could also be a cheeky signal that this is the set where power levels start to tick upward. Not in an unhealthy way (we hope), but in a way that introduces stronger staples to help freshen up existing archetypes. Decks could gain more explosive aggro cards, frustrating new tempo cards, more efficient removal, or new ways to cheat costs and punish greedy opponents.

Let’s just all silently agree not to wish for 1 cost units with 7 HP.

Secrets

Spies, deception, the shady underbelly of the Star Wars galaxy.  This could be a return to the underworld and things that are hidden in dark corners that we only hardly dare to look at.  More Crimson Dawn, Black Sun, or Hutt Cartel cards possibly or just anything tagged with “Underworld”.

Secret as a Mechanic

Could be that the new set, like those that came before, has a unique set defining mechanic.  What if that mechanic is “Secret”?  Could be something where a unit card could be deployed face down.  The cost would have to be the same for each card regardless of the printed cost on the front, say 2 resources.  Then either it flips automatically if attacked which could give you a massive resource boost while being a tremendous gamble for the attacker, or there could be a reveal/flip cost or condition to turn it over and show what the unit actually is.

Return of Prior Mechanics

Could this be the first set to bring back some non-evergreen mechanics from prior sets?  Smuggle for example is great, fits thematically since smuggled items are generally kept secret, and it opens up a ton of play lines.  Hidden is a new one, and hidden things are also secret to an extent so could fit thematically.

More Porgs?

Hear us out…
Ahch-To was a secret location central to the sequel trilogy. Nobody could find it. Kind of sounds like the definition of “secret” to us. If Ahch-To becomes a location in this set, and it should, then obviously we should get more porg units. We’ve only scratched the surface of what they can do. Porg Shaman? Porg Assassin? Porg with a tiny lightsaber it found lying around? These are all possibilities.

Wrapping Up

Back in March, Porg Depot did successfully predict a few things for Legends of the Force.  We got the legends content correct, although we’d like to see more of it.  Powerful Force users certainly were in there including the father, the son and the daughter.  Plus we did get not one, but TWO porg related units.  A couple other predictions missed the mark, but we did nail some of them at least.  Time will tell how well we did on this one.

What are you expecting, or hoping for, from the next release?
