Porgonomics: Prestige & Other Variants

Jump to Lightspeed introduced us to Carbonite Packs and with them, Prestige cards. As a human Jawa, I’m attracted to shiny things and getting the best price for them. So I wanted to start tracking and comparing Prestige prices vs the former bling standard of Hyperspace printings.

I have collected prices on a weekly basis for 4 weeks now based on TCGPlayer Market.

Prices have fallen consistently across the board and seem to be leveling out. Prices followed trends that I’m familiar with from my Magic the Gathering days. Pre-release prices were very high, and quickly plummeted as packs became more widely available. With the limited number of Carbonite boxes available, I’ll be curious to see if prices start to climb again. I plan to keep tracking for exactly that reason, and we’ll be able to identify weekly winners as a result.

But for now, it looks like a good time to start collecting your favorite ships as prices seem to have stabilized at a presumed bottom.

Top 5 Biggest Losers

When it comes to prestige foils, these 5 cards saw the biggest dip. But clearly Raddus is getting no love.

Overall though, Hyperspace Foils saw a more consistent drop in price, and I noticed many hyperspace cards maintaining a higher pricetag than their foil counterparts.

Winners

And we do have a number of cards beginning their accent. Below are the 5 biggest winners in all categories of printing styles that I have been tracking:

We’ll see if IG – 2000 continues to trend upward if Jango gets the banhammer. It has a powerful When Played effect and might continue to see play post ban, especially if Triple Dark Raid stays legal.

Other Thoughts

In my personal opinion, the time to buy singles has arrived. The cost of most Prestige cards, foil or not, is below the cost of a single pack. So unless you are crossing your fingers for a showcase or serialized card, your money might be better spent on the individual card you are looking for.
