ASH: Preview Review 5/20

We could be looking at the best two drop unit that SWU has ever seen.

The new Bo-Katan unit at 2/4 for 2 cost would be decent but not amazing. However she also has Raid 2 which means she’s going to be attacking as a 4/4.

Digging through the two drop cards that SWU has had so far, the best total stat points are a tie between Gungi (2/5) and Royal Guard Attache (2/5). Given that the later does 2 damage to itself when played, it presents more like a 2/3, plus it’s also no longer premier legal.

Dropping to 6 total stat points there are a few others including cards like:

• Doctor Evazan – Wanted on Twelve Systems (3/3)
• Imperial Dark Trooper (3/3)
• Major Partagaz – Healthcare Provider (0/6)
• R2-D2 – Full of Solutions (2/4)
• Determined Recruit (3/3)
• Val – Loyal to the End (2/4)

What about the Raid ability though boosting the new Bo? Is that a far comparison to equate to the base stats? Probably not, so we dug a bit further.

By our count (and admittedly we could have missed something) there are two cards at two cost with Raid that are close. Separatist Comando and Ryloth Militia, which of course are both from Twilight of the Republic and not Premier legal.

Separatist Commando is 2/3 and with the Raid 2 gets up to 4/3 for 7 total stat points, its Raid being conditional on controlling another Separatist unit which never was a popular tribal in competitive play.

Ryloth Militia has no conditions on its Raid 1. It caps out as a 3/3 at 6 total points when including the extra power on attack.

Conclusion

Mandalorians seem like they will be pretty prevalent in Ashes of the Empire. Playing the new Bo-Katan on turn 1 and following up with either another unit or the Mandalorian tokens with the trait of the same name, means that Bo is swinging right away as a 4/4.

Our take is that this card is pretty likely to see Premier play. The one caveat could be what the tribal Mandalorian leader looks like and how viable that component would be to a deck.
