R2-D2 Tier List

For starters, every version of R2-D2 is awesome. Without this little guy, nearly the entire Star Wars saga does not happen. Chronologically, the Royal Starship would have been destroyed while escaping Naboo in The Phantom Menace and then basically no more movies. By release order, the Death Star Plans probably never get to the Rebel Alliance Yavin in A New Hope and again no more movies.

However, if we absolutely HAD to rank the cards we have so far for R2, we’d break them down like this.

S

Nothing yet.
We’ll reserve this spot for when FFG finally decides to print an R2 leader.
#WheresR2Leader?

** Reminder including Battle of Hoth and the upcoming Twin Suns decks, there are 24 out of 136 leaders with two or more versions before we see R2:
4 = Leia, Han, Boba, Vader
3 = Lando, Ahsoka, Anakin, Asajj, Jabba, Padme
2 = Dooku, Obi-Wan, Luke, Rey, Kylo, Inquisitor, Cassian, Palpatine, Maul, Chewie, Jyn, Krennic, Thrawn, Hera

A

It’s hard to top the original. This card was a staple in many heroic decks through Star Wars Unlimited’s first year and continued to see play in some spots during the various 2025 metas.

The art is simple. Perfect shot of the little blue astromech rolling across the floor.
The ability is useful as a game mechanic to help dig through a deck.
The subtitle “Ignoring Protocol” is perfect.

B

Other than rolling around, finding astromechs snuggly fit into fighters makes a ton of sense. It’s kind of their primary thing really. With the piloting rules introduced it made 100% to get R2 a pilot card. Playing for free and allowing another pilot upgrade on the same ship fits thematically. Again kudos to FFG on the subtitle of “ARTOOOOOOOOO!” as it perfectly captures Luke’s whiney scream when Vader knocks the little guy out of commission during the trench run.

C

Knocks against these two simply because of more limited game play due in part to having aspects outside of just heroic.

“Full of Solutions” fits the artwork with the little rocket thrusters being used. Game play it’d not bad allowing you to discard and dig for something else that may be needed.

“Part of the Plan” also allows some digging this time without the discard. However it lines up on par with the other one because of the lower stats. This one also hasn’t actually been available yet so it could jump up the list depending on actual playability.

D

Not a terrible card at all, but just not as good as the other ones. This is kind of expected from the Intro Battle: Hoth box as those cards where designed to be starter type cards. While some of those cards have made it to significant Premier play, this one has not broken through.

Honorable Mentions

While not R2-D2, we have to give some recognition to any other astromech droid in the Star Wars galaxy. Thank you FFG for continuing to make fun little droids.
