LAW: Top Cunning Cards

The Porg Depot team has spent the last forty-eight hours practicing our best “scoundrel smirk,” attempting to cheat at Sabacc against a protocol droid (and losing badly), and trying to convince Albert Porgstein that he cannot, in fact, “exhaust” the office coffee machine to stop others from using it. We’ve emerged from the back alleys of the Outer Rim with our top picks for the most porgtastic cards in the Cunning aspect.

Did we pull these rankings out of a Hutt’s pocket?… Maybe.
Is it “cunning” if the porg just hides the cards?… We’re counting it.
Has the blue milk finally fermented?… It’s getting weird.

Hero

Space units with abilities that are on the cost curve are generally decent.  At 4/5 this may be the best 4 cost Cunning Hero space unit available after rotation and rivals even some of the 5 cost space units.  Having the Rebel trait and Saboteur makes this pretty formidable in that arena.  If an opponent is not prepared for a play line of Alliance X-Wing, into a Falcon, into this Rebel Blockade Runner, and maybe a Lightmaker after that, then they are in for a rough game.

Liberty gives hero decks a viable top end option in space that checks a lot of boxes.  It can exhaust any unit, clogs up space as a huge Sentinel, and happens to be in the aspect that provides the most credits to ramp it out a few rounds early.  It doesn’t serve the same purpose that Home One did, but Liberty is an imposing space unit nonetheless that should fit nicely into many hero Cunning decks.

Rose is an absolutely great card. Any time you can get a unit that comes into play ready means it can be both an immediate threat to a unit or base, whereas ambush has action economy, it notably can’t attack the base directly.  Rose coming in at 5 resources with a 5/5 stat line and made easily ready by having any non-unique unit in play on your side means she can potentially clean up a popular sentinel such as Captain Typho or the new Qui-Gon, and if nothing is blocking her, just send all 5 points to base putting a lot of pressure on your opponent.

Villain

Crafty Smuggler was a staple card in Cunning decks for quite some time.  Getting nearly the exact same card but in the space arena where units generally have slightly less total stats must be good.  With only the four available sets after rotation, the 2 drop Cunning space units available for a villain deck aren’t very plentiful either.  There are 2/2 units with either Hidden or Saboteur, Zygerrian Starhopper, Rampart, and Emissary’s Shethipede.  Not a very high bar, but Black Sun Patroller could easily be the best there is in the category.

The new Boba Fett may take a credit to reach his full potential, but when played on the 4 resource turn he goes into the following turn keeping any leader deployment in check.  There are a lot of 5 deploy, 3/6 leaders, which Boba Fett takes out with ease.  If they happen to have more health, that’s an easy fix by just paying 1 resource to deal an extra 3 damage.  He is a little slow when played on 5 resources, but in decks that can get him out early, the new Boba Fett will do some work.

For a three cost event, this is doing a lot.  Getting to exhaust any opponent’s unit on the board can sometimes alone create a very important tempo swing.  Saving this for just the right moment after a leader deploy can really mess with your opponent’s plans.  Then you additionally get to look at their hand giving you knowledge about their upcoming plays.  Then finally you can discard a card of your choice that just has to match an aspect of the exhausted unit.  But unlike some discard cards of the past that limited you to a card type such as jam communications, which only removes events, this can grab events, units, or upgrades.  So whatever is threatening to your deck strategy you can choose at that key moment.

Neutral

In a set where one of the defining mechanics is the introduction of credits as a type of currency to be leveraged in the game it seems fitting that there is a card that simply creates a credit for 1 resource cost.  Pay something at one point to get a benefit in a later round.  Hard to say at this early stage what crazy large units will be hitting the board early due to credits.  However when you can use this in round 1 to power out a 5/6 Chewbacca leader in round 2… well, it’s going to be useful in some meta deck.

Qui-Gon is a pretty solid Sentinel, coming in at 3/5 for 4 resources with only a single Cunning aspect requirement.  His ability offers a little bit of deck filtering which we’re always happy to have at no extra cost.  He’s a solid, versatile unit that can slot into many decks.

At 6 cost, this unit may look weak with only 3/3 stats, but you never want to underestimate that bounce effect.  This unit basically combines the expected 3 cost of a 3/3 space unit with the now rotated out 3 cost effect of Waylay.  This card will come in clutch late game when an opponent uses their 6 or even more resources to play what they believe is their bomb.  Bouncing it back to their hand while still advancing your board state could easily swing the game in your favor.  Consider that in this set, they may have also used up credits to play something ahead of curve, it is possible that card won’t come back down for a few turns now that they have used up those credits.
