LAW: Top Aggression Cards

The Porg Depot team has spent the last week combing through all of the the LAW cards, making more blue milk than you would think a porg can drink and trying to give Albert Porgstein a haircut, which was unsuccessful.  We’ve come up with our top picks for the most porgtastic cards in the aggression aspect. Here are the hot takes from ObiWein, Veers21, and JawaJeff.

Will we be correct… maybe.
Do we care…. no.
Are we sick of blue milk… yes.

Hero

A 3/1 unit for 1 cost was great all the way at the beginning of the game when we got Greedo in Spark of Rebellion.  This time around it’s got the extra aspect for hero and no game text, but it makes up for that with the Rebel trait.  Not only is this one of the best Hero Aggression cards, but it could easily be one of the best cards in the entire set.  This unit will be good in Premier, Eternal, Draft… basically formats in which you can play units.

We’ve seen various iterations of 2 cost X/4 units that can deal 3 damage, notably Aurra Sing from Legends of the Force.  The Cloud-Rider Veteran is likely not on the level of Aurra Sing, since being able to do 3 damage to a unit or base is valuable, but the veteran still has a relevant trait as Underworld, and has the ability to deal 2 of its damage past a sentinel.  It doesn’t trade well with other units, but in an aggro deck, where you are more concerned with pushing damage, maybe the Veteran can find a home.

In a meta that will probably see more space/pilot decks doing an extra point of damage to two units could take out two tie fighters in a Vader deck or since this card is red hero, damaging a unit before attacking with a Red Five played on the previous turn could all be relevant.  Also having the fighter trait is important for Luke JTL decks, and the rebel trait always has potential.

Villain

Astromech; check.  Awesome art; check.  Playable; absolutely.
The stats are 4 hit points give some staying power for a 2 cost unit and the 2 power with the conditional point to units in the same arena makes him pretty formidable as a first play of a game.  This psychotic droid could easily be a staple in villain aggression decks for the next two years.

Sebulba’s Podracer reminds me a bit of the original Fett’s Firespray.  It’s incredibly powerful in one specific place, with Sebulba leader, and pretty bad everywhere else.  This quick look is assuming you are playing Sebulba.  Its stats aren’t great for the cost of 3 resources, so it’s not just something you can windmill slam on the board in round 2, however, if you choose to do this the rules say it must be followed by a “YIPPEEEE”.  We don’t make the rules, just follow them.

The podracer is a great secret weapon though.  Being able to sneak it out after most units have attacked and immediately ready it to attack is reminiscent of the OG Falcon.  From there your opponent either HAS to deal with it, or get hit for 6 every turn.

In the right place and the right time, Sebulba’s Podracer is an amazing card.  All I have to say is, now THIS is podracing.

A card that plays great with BT-1 is his sidekick 0-0-0. A 3 drop with a 4/4 stat line are great stats.  0-0-0’s ability just adds icing to the cake.  After BT-1 puts a red card into your discard, 0-0-0 allows you to put that card back into your deck to ping an additional point of damage to your opponent’s base, and once again having the droid and underworld traits are both relevant for a variety of decks.

Neutral

Heroic Sacrifice from Spark of Rebellion has been a great card since the game’s inception and has been a staple in many Aggression decks.  Flash the Vents is a new spin on the similar 1 cost pump event.  You give up the card draw but gain Overwhelm which could become significant in the ever growing set of good Sentinel units we’ve been getting.  Oh and the versatility increase of not requiring the hero aspect is a nice bonus.

Speaking of 1-cost events, Commence the Festivities gives aggressive decks a second option beyond Flash the Vents.  It’s not uncommon for an aggro deck to stop resourcing once they hit 6 resources.  At that point, Commence the Festivities gives you an inexpensive way to guarantee your unit pushes damage to the base with a +2/+0 bonus.  Even without fewer resources, it still gives a unit Sabateur, which isn’t great for 1, but as a floor this could be a great way to strike the final blow.

With credits being the new way to ramp, it is likely that there will be builds heavily leaning into acquiring credits in order to make big plays early.  People are already brewing decks around Krennic and Lando leaders making this card an almost auto include for your sideboard as it will quickly shut down numerous strategies from A Lawless Time.  That may be unfortunate if it drives these new decks out of competitive play, but that is why Arvel Skeen clearly needs to make the list of powerful cards from this set.
