LAW: Preview Reviews 2/3

Preview cards courtesy of FFG and L8 Night Gaming.

Our porgs are a little confused as to the design philosophy behind some of these cards from yesterday.  Hopefully there is some more synergy on its way that could make some of these not just take up space in our bulk boxes.

Enfys Nest

The front side of this leader could almost be blank.  Paying 2 in order to get any leader effect is a massive cost.  Even leaders with abilities costing 1 often don’t get played because they require you to play off curve for deployments.

There aren’t many On Attack effects that are worth paying 2 resources for and that list gets significantly shorter after rotation.  The list goes Red Five, Sabines Masterpiece and Quinlan.  Even some of those are questionable at times.  There are of course others you CAN duplicate, but you shouldn’t be.

The ideal line would be to play a 4-cost unit with a great on attack ability, then deploy Enfys next turn, attack with the unit and get the free doubled effect. Unfortunately, that 4-cost unit doesn’t exist at this point.  Quinlan followed by a Breaking In to buff his power allows him to deal 10 to base.

The good news is, Enfys has great stats.  3/7 for a 5 deploy is premium and the ability can certainly be powerful.  While she’s likely not there yet, the potential is there.  Hopefully it happens before 2 years go by and she rotates out.

Enfys Nest’s Helmet

These specific unit upgrades really should do something additional if/when they are deployed onto that specific unit.  Many of the unique lightsabers have that kind of effect although a bit of the reverse since it only does a cool thing on that particular unit.  Why not have both?  Something like +2/+0 to another unit, and +4/+0 when attached to Enfys Nest herself.

Beyond that questionable design choice, 2 resources for an upgrade that gives +0/+2 is horrible, so the effect better be amazing to offset it.  Enfy’s Helmet does not do that.  +3 power is nice, but it’s slow and requires multiple units.  We had Armed to the Teeth as a similar effect that cost 2 and had Smuggle.  That one split the extra power between the upgraded unit and another unit.  Enfy’s Helmet offers less extra damage overall, and it’s all bundled onto a second unit.

It’s not clear what they were hoping for with this one.

Weazel

On the surface this card seems like it could be decent, however it falls quickly when digging into it.  Played round 1 due to the 2 cost makes sense.  The on attack trigger will do exactly nothing in round 2 since you won’t have another unit that would be attacking.  Assuming it’s still in play the first time the attack trigger is meaningful would be two rounds after it was deployed during round 3.  This card is horrible, especially when compared to other 2-cost units we’ve been given access to.

Aerie

What are we doing here, FFG?  When we compare this to a card we have seen in the past, Ruthless Raider, Aerie is pure garbage.  Sure, it’s a decent enough effect to double with Enfys, but at 6 resources, you’d like to have either premium stats and/or a when played ability.  Aerie has neither.  There is a good chance you spend 6 resources for this and get nothing out of it.  It’s slow, understated and just looks bad.
