One Week To Go

The first Star Wars Unlimited Galactic Championship is about a week away now, and if you are like us, we know you are as excited as a porg at the penny slots. Wide-eyes, wings flapping and one pull away from greatness.

To answer the burning questions you’ve all been wanting to know, yes, the full human contingent of the Porg Depot team will be there. Unfortunately, the porgs are still on the no-fly list after that incident with the in-flight snack cart. We’ll also have no shortage of porg madness to give out to those who can appreciate a porg flying a TIE Fighter.  We’ll even have some Galactic Championship exclusive Porg Depot force tokens plus some other goodies!  Just ask when you see us.

Like all serious competitors (and irresponsible porgs with questionable time management), we’ve been furiously fluffing feathers behind the scenes, plotting our daily schedules, battling over deck slots, and consulting ancient porg prophecies to decide what decks to play. So… what did the sacred feathers reveal?

Since Spark of Rebellion, I’ve been running various flavors of Sabine.  Maybe it’s because I’ve got the attention span of a porg, or maybe it’s just that the pure joy of throwing everything at your opponent as fast as possible is more fun than playing the long game.

Every time I’ve tried to branch out, it’s been a disaster, well, aside from a brief Boba Yellow fling back in the SHD meta days. Control decks? Forget it. What works for other people just never clicks for me. So for the main event, and probably for most of my ticket grinding, I’ll be sticking with what I know best: some flavor of Sabine.  Whether ECL, Data Vault, or something spicier may be a decision I make on the plane ride out to Vegas.

I’m planning to jump into Day 1 of the main event with 100% enthusiasm. It feels special to be part of the very first Galactic Championship.  Day 2? Probably not happening for me. Day 3? Almost certainly not. But that’s fine. If I somehow make a deep run, excellent, but my primary goal for the entire Galactic weekend is to just have fun.

I had great success last year at Gencon with Han2 Blue, taking home a Finalizer playmat.  When I saw the cards being revealed early on for Legends of the Force, I knew Han would be my guy again.  I grabbed a showcase, and have been playing with only him ever since.

My plan for day 1 is to play Han2 Blue force and try to get comfortable with the mirror match.  My main thought was to either play Han 2 Blue or play something that beats Han 2 Blue.  I also plan on having Gar Saxon ECL and Vader Yellow built to have a good variety of decks to play over the weekend.  Vader feels strong into the force heavy decks since space is almost uncontested. Similar to JawaJeffs gameplan below, I would like to have that option, especially for grinding out premier pods all weekend.

I’m mostly looking forward to having a fun SWU weekend with friends, and hanging out with all the discord folks and Porg fans.  However the main event goes, I won’t be disappointed. Win, lose, or squawk, there’s still plenty more Star Wars Unlimited to flap our wings about.

Now I may do something completely egregious for the first galactic championship and play a deck completely outside the curious flock (something off meta). I will most likely be playing my Poe Yellow deck.  When it works, it can be quite the aggro deck, but it admittedly probably won’t have the consistency to get me through the main event.  So after having fun being part of day 1, you will probably find me enjoying numerous side events.

I am really looking forward to trying the LoF super sealed.  Twice as many packs means twice the porg pulls to put in my deck.  I am also planning on bringing two pre-constructed decks with porgs as a central component to just play pick up games.  If you see me, feel free to ask to borrow one so we can get some porg on porg game play.

Wrap Up

The entire team is flapping with excitement to get to Vegas and be a part of the biggest SWU gathering to date.

Some burning questions remain:

  • Will the Porg Depot team stick to their deck plans from a week out, or pivot at the last minute before main event decks need to be submitted?
  • Is Jerry Porgfeld correct and Force Throw will be everywhere?
  • Does the Porg Depot Patreon count go higher than one?
  • Will anyone do a late night Carbonite draft pod that we could play in?
  • Have you planned out your weekend using our side event ticket breakdown?

Regardless of any of these pending questions, the event should be a blast.  Please introduce yourself if you see us.  We’ll be hard to miss!
