Product Review: Metalfab Streamer Tokens
Star Wars Unlimited has a ton of different things to track from round to round. Initiative, damage, experience, and shields.
Up until now I’ve been using pretty generic six sided dice in different colors. Red for damage, green for experience, and blue for shields. While the colors make sense to me as a player, it can sometimes be confusing for an opponent when they may not be used to the color scheme. Also at a quick glance and in bad lighting, maybe they could be mistaken for counters of another sort.
Because of some of the issues with dice and because there are such an array of available alternatives, I decided to take the plunge and try out some streamer tokens from Metalfab.
These tokens may be on the expensive side. The streamer shield goes for $6 each or three for $15. The streamer experience are slightly cheaper at $5 each or $13 for three. However, the cost seems justified as these appear to be very high quality. The colored metal really pops and the shiny surfaces reflect light nicely. Each is etched and the white enamel lines are dug into the top layer giving the tokens a nice texture.
Both the shield and experience token also have some serious heft to them. The shield token is listed as being 16 grams and the experience token is listed as 10 grams. Compared to a 6 gram US Quarter, these are some beefy tokens.
The sizing of the tokens is potentially on the larger side compared to some that I’ve seen other players use, but that is a little bit of the point of the streamer token series from Metalfab. They take up a reasonable amount of space on a card when on the board. This is a plus for any games on camera and also an opponent could not mistake them for something else or miss seeing them.
There are smaller tokens available from Metalfab, however chose the streamer ones due to the experience tokens being rectangular instead of chevron shaped.
Both of the tokens are double sided. The experience has a +1/+1 on one side and a +2/+2 on the other. The shield is unnumbered on the first side and branded with a 2 on the other side in a slightly lighter shade of blue.
Other extras… The tokens came in a velvety red pouch branded with the Metalfab logo. There was also an included streamer damage token which must have been thrown in either as a thank you, by accident, or as a marketing tactic to get me to buy more stuff. The damage token is similar quality to the other pieces with a 1 on one side and a 3 on the other both accompanied by the names of the numerals written out in Aurebesh.
Overall, pretty happy with the purchase right out of the box. Glad that there are fancy, high quality options available for stuff like this even though the game is only just finishing its first calendar year. Definitely going to start using the shields and experience tokens right away, but at least for now will probably stick to the red dice for damage. Granted if I start playing a deck with clones or battle droids I’d need to check those Metalfab tokens out next.
